Von Brettern & Welten: Theater Lindenhof

Dr. Juliane Zellner

Exploring Theater and Spaces Through Sound. A podcast from the International Theatre Institute (ITI)

The diversity of the theater landscape is matched by the diversity of its architectural and spatial manifestations. How theater is performed in Germany depends to a large extent on where: whether it’s representative classicism or functional modernity, new construction or repurposing, a proscenium stage or a stage-as-space, the city center or the outskirts—it is always architecture and spatial practices, urban and socio-spatial contexts, that help shape the artistic program.

To mark the awarding of the 2026 Federal Theater Prize to four venues, this podcast explores theater through its architectural and spatial form. Each of the four performance venues is brought to life through an audio walk. Places and buildings are explored on foot—as a “Walk & Talk” between urban planner and theater scholar Dr. Juliane Zellner and a representative voice from each respective theater.

Episode #2: Theater Lindenhof
A tour of Theater Lindenhof with Stefan Hallmayer and Dr. Juliane Zellner.

A tour of the Lindenhof Theater with Stefan Hallmayer and Dr. Juliane Zellner. The Lindenhof Theater is located in Melchingen in the Swabian Alb. Founded in the early 1980s as a private initiative in a former inn, it has evolved into a cultural center, thanks in no small part to the renovation of the existing building and an expansion. Today, the Lindenhof combines three performance venues and, with its program, serves as a meeting place for the region.

Stefan Hallmayer is a co-founder of the Lindenhof Theater and has been the theater’s artistic director since 2011.
